Early in this reporting period, the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) made some progress on their implementation guide, but was faced with additional setbacks as the ongoing COVID pandemic continued to create challenges for the agency. In October the site leads and JDI coaches had a productive meeting with a mental health consultant to discuss the project goals centered around Woodland Correctional Facility and the development of a PREA model for working with inmates with mental illness. The site also worked to finalize their implementation guide documents and timeline, and updated their budget. JDI coaches and the site discussed the submission process for completing their implementation guide, but because of COVID related reassignments of project leads, there were significant delays in submitting. Since the approval of their implementation guide by the DOJ in early December, JDI coaches have made multiple attempts to schedule a meeting with the site, but have been unsuccessful. At this point, with less than a year remaining on the original project timeline, the coaches are not confident that the site will be able to complete the project goals or even make significant strides towards achieving some of the originally planned activities. The JDI coaches believe Michigan DOC will need an extension to complete this project, and their hope for the interim is to help them set goals for what can be achieved in the time remaining.
