CSG and the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) conducted individual virtual office hours sessions with 6 of the 9 Criminal Court Behavioral Health Case Processing Learning Collaborative participant teams to review their team workplans and discuss next steps for the teams to take in terms of improving case processing for defendants with behavioral health needs.
This Zoom call was with the court team from Lockport, NY. 4 people joined the call: Judge Watson and Barbara Kubera, Court Administrator. Richard Schwermer from NCSC and Katie Herman from CSG organized and led the call. The team reported that they wanted to work on improving their sanction and reward systems for defendants in their specialty courts, and improve defendants feelings of procedural justice in court. They agreed that getting direct feedback and evaluations from defendants directly, and from other partners who work in court, was an important way to improve procedural justice dynamics and case processing. The team also discussed best practices around sanctions and rewards, and the importance of using consistent, evidence-based sanctions and rewards to encourage compliance with court and treatment directives.
