Lisa sent the following email to WCSO:

Happy New Year!

I hope this email finds you well. I am reaching out for our monthly check-in on your progress and to ask if there are any training and technical assistance needs that you have at this time. These check-ins are an effort to facilitate regular communication and ensure that your site is receiving the training and technical assistance you need.

Have you had any recent success stories that you would like to share with BJA or the SAKI TTA team? These could include any specific achievements, goals, milestones, or challenges addressed that you would consider successes under the SAKI project, as well as news stories on arrests or convictions.
Have you had a chance to review the development plan? If there are no updates or questions, the copy I sent for review will be the most recent version that we will keep on file. Your site can update the plan at any time as this is a fluid document that will continue to evolve.

Other Relevant Information

Susan replied with the following:
Lisa,

Happy New Year to you as well. I have attached the December Monthly report.

I reviewed the development plan, however it has not been updated.

If you are looking for speaker at the ODU Working Group, Doug Hormann is interested in presenting the overview of our limited contact collection program including details about the digital thumb reader.

Lisa sent this information to the Working Group call team and filed the notes in the WCSO folder on the SAKI share drive.

Lisa will check in on the development plan during the next couple of check-in emails.

Milestone Description

Lisa and Crystal from RTI and Carey from BJA held a check-in call with WCSO.

Notes below:

Will be presenting at the Bode Conference – First week in May – they are really excited about that

Actively going after people in OR – Portland metro area – they will be going to bend next weekend, Salem today for collections, first of May down in Eugene
Needs to find facilities in southern OR near the end of May, first part of June – they tried to send out regular letters instead of certified letters – so they moved back to sending certified letters
They like that they get the feedback on the certified return part
With COVID – marked that the postman delivered it – not the actual person – that has been a challenge

Questions – are any Owed DNA sites that are collaborating with other states to do collections? WCSO has a lot of people in Washington State – she knows they have a collection site up there – so she wants to know if they can use each other’s facilities - they have been collecting out of state by getting those facilities to collect for them (WCSO sends the kit to them)
Pattie – this was something that was discussed at the last owed DNA working group – Texas has thought about this as well but has not started doing it – Pattie suggested talking to SME’s to get the ball rolling to make sure it’s legal
Susan – what if they are using BJA money? If they both have grant funding, it would probably be something that BJA would support that effort but Carey will need to double check on that – if it’s volunteering then there may not be any legal issues, if states do not have matching statutes then they might run into trouble.
On the next WGC we need to have some SME’s on that call to discuss this – Carey said she will follow up on that
Lisa to send Peyton an email about this

They want to request a grant extension – Carey said they usually want them to wait until the last quarter but if they are having issues with salaries then they can reach out – a compelling need to ask earlier they can
Will they fund more? The solicitation should be dropping soon - so yes

See if they can data share internally with the hits – see if they can get one with the lab so they could get more information and they can follow up on it

If they apply for another grant then they just want to focus on the sex offenders – do they think they could just get a grant for that? They don’t do that – Carey will

Lisa sent an email to Peyton about their question for the next LODNA call.

Crystal and Lisa with RTI held a monthly check-in call with WCSO. Everything is going well for them. Susan asked to get in contact with the site coordinator from Washington state regarding collecting DNA from offenders who are located in Washington. Lisa reached out to the SL for Washington State, and she confirmed that she will let the SC in Washington know to reach out to Susan.

Carey provided an update regarding testing for LODNA out of state and said that they can proceed with reaching out as long as all of the laws are being followed.
