Center staff are working with statewide treatment court coordinator, Yolonda Woodhouse, to identify possible training opportunities. As outlined in their FY20 grant narrative, the state could benefit from trainings on motivational interviewing (MI) and needs support as it plans its annual training conference. Center staff hosted a series of two-part motivational interviewing trainings, for judges and attorneys respectively, delivered by Michael Clark, Director of the Center for Strengths-Based Strategies. Ms. Woodhouse also informed Center staff that the North Carolina Judicial Branch decided to reschedule the state’s in-person training conference to April 2023. Instead, Center staff Monica Christofferson, Colleen Gibbons, Karen Otis and Ms. Woodhouse planned for a smaller scale virtual training workshop entirely for local treatment court coordinators. The workshop, held on April 4-5, featured presentations from subject matter experts on various topics including drug testing, data collection, and racial and ethnic disparities. Center staff began working with the state's new treatment court coordinator Alexia Stith as it plans its annual training conference scheduled for April 4-5 2023. Center staff Najah Magloire and Janelle Cotto flew to North Carolina to provide operational support at the statewide conference. Center staff also held a booth in the exhibit hall of the conference where attendees could access Center publications.

On December 9, 2020, Center staff Colleen Gibbons, Karen Otis and Monica Christofferson held an exploratory call with statewide drug court coordinator, Yolonda Woodhouse, to discuss the state's FY2020 BJA-funded grant. The objectives of the grant include hosting a statewide conference, providing training on Motivational Interviewing (MI) to all court staff and procuring an online registration and evaluation management portal for statewide use.
Center staff and Ms. Woodhouse discussed several areas of collaboration including, assistance with planning the agenda for the state's drug court conference, support for the statewide rollout of MI training initiatives and reviewing the state's data measure to provide feedback on methods to improve collection. Center staff will draft a work plan to capture the above ideas and make recommendations for action steps.
On February 24, Center staff Karen Otis, Monica Christofferson, and Colleen Gibbons submitted a draft work plan to North Carolina statewide drug court coordinator, Yolonda Woodhouse for review and feedback. According to the work plan, Center staff will help the state by: supporting statewide Motivational Interviewing training initiatives, supporting the statewide treatment court conference and review the state's data measures and provide feedback on how to improve data collection and management.
Ms. Woodhouse and Center staff will schedule a time to discuss possible feedback and next steps.
Center staff Monica Christofferson, Colleen Gibbons, and Karen Otis continued to hold discussions with statewide coordinator Yolonda Woodhouse in furtherance of planning the Motivation Interviewing (MI) trainings. The MI trainings have been tentatively schedule for July and September. North Carolina are contracting with Michael Clark to perform the trainings.
Center staff are also working with Ms. Woodhouse to support the state's annual training conference in 2022 with presentations that have yet to be determined. In addition to presenting at the conference, Center staff are helping the state with logistics of the schedule including planning for breakout and plenary sessions.
