Qtr Update: Not a lot of progress to report. Discussed the two aspects of the trauma-informed piece. 1) staff training-plan to tie it into the de-escalation training that is already in place in order to increase staff buy-in. Have decided to pilot at 5 sites; the 3 female facilities and 2 male facilities. The male facilities have not been determined for certain. The point person they HAD for this piece resigned (the Transitional Service Director). In 2 weeks, they have a meeting that will determine who will take over the facilitation of this piece of the grant work. Once that occurs they will be moving forward collaboratively to get RFPs out for the trauma-informed curriculum, etc. 2) Staff refresher training - need to get the RFP put together and sent out for a contractor to develop this training. Jason Effman, the PREA Coordinator, asserts the current refresher is "bland." Their vision is to create a short film regarding staff boundaries (perhaps with a former CO that has been convicted); someone to speak candidly about how staff can get involved in relationships with inmates and more importantly how and why to avoid doing it. Want to have more of an impact and resonate with staff.
Attendees: Jason Effman, Elaine Humphrey, Tony ____. Non-grant sidenotes-Just finished 9th audit this year and updated employee training. Currently partnering with state coalition to use STOP/VOCA penalty funds to tie into the state sexual assault hotline and also to expand relationships with local providers to set up scheduled emotional support as follow up for inmates (in lieu of hotline calls since the providers have to compartmentalize services given to prison population).
