meeting objectives as defined by grant
“Train-the-Trainer is scheduled for camp and field supervisors in May.
Planning for youth education is in the initial stages.
Training is the focus at the LAPD. Just Detention International (JDI) conducted “train-the-trainers” sessions at the outset. Thereafter, JDI held classes for supervisors, field staff, partner agencies and transportation staff. It is expected that staff from both the detention halls and the camps will complete the initial training by the end of June. JDI will conduct classes for medical and mental health partners. The LAPD will hold classes for school staff.
The youth education program is also in progress.
Training for all components at the LAPD has been completed. Just Detention International (JDI) has assisted the PREA Coordinator to achieve this challenging goal.
Orientation materials, a questionnaire and an educational video are now available to youthful offenders.
Resident education in the halls and camps is currently in progress.
Training materials are still in draft due to an unresolved union issue. Leadership has not reviewed nor approved the final product.
Training for current staff, new recruits, contractors (education, medical and mental health), and volunteers has been completed. Refresher courses ae scheduled every two years. PREA has been incorporated into the resident intake process. Orientation includes a one-on-one PREA-focused discussion.
The youth handbook has been updated to include PREA information. Union approval is expected. JDI has secured the services of two rape crisis centers for LAPD residents. These are the same centers which provide service to the County’s adult inmate population.
