Peer education is making good progress. Just Detention International (JDI) has trained male and female peer educators and observed them during inmate education classes Random inmate assessments have provided positive feedback. An inmate brochure is in development.
SCDC sponsored training on trauma-informed care for county jails and sexual assault centers.
The well-received program is likely to be repeated next year.
Training for the 34 associate wardens to ensure compliance with the PREA standards was initiated in March. The next two half day sessions were in July with seventeen in each group. The regional directors also participated in the training. The majors requested the same training as what had been provided to the regional directors. The sessions were focused on documentation of sexual abuse.
The SCDC grant evaluator, Hayden Smith, will lead a webinar discussion in late August for wardens and assistant wardens on transgendered population who were historically placed in protective custody.
