Scheduled virtual site visit with Jim Markey to discuss how to address communication challenges between law enforcement and SANEs.
Site visit scheduled with Jim Markey.
Virtual site visit with Jim Markey to discuss communication challenges between law enforcement and SANEs. Oklahoma provided background to the issue and the implementation of the statue for sexual assault response. Two key issues were identified: law enforcement compliance with the statue and tribal communities participation in the program.
Jim recommended they develop guidance or best practices either in the form of a webinar, training, document, or brief to disseminate to local LEAs about the process and importance of picking up the SAK. He also recommended developing a more centralized and organized SANE community across the state.
Oklahoma plans to develop guidance for local LEAs.
Cleaned notes from virtual site visit and sent to BJA for approval. BJA approved of the notes to be sent to OK.
Debrief with Jim Markey and Amy Durall from virtual site visits. Discussed updates to OK's victim notification protocols, developing guidelines for SANEs and LEAs for submitting SAKs to the lab, and working with tribal nations for their inventory, investigations, and prosecution. Amy and Jim recommended connecting OK with Dallas and Trenton County to discuss shipping SAKs from SANEs or LEAs and looking into housing unreported SANEs in the OSBI, the crime lab. They also recommended meeting with the SC from Kentucky to discuss storing unreported SAKs in the crime lab.
OK will look into shipping SAKs from SANEs and LEAs as well as continue to develop the victim notification protocols. The OK team is also looking into assisting with a Sexual Assault Investigators Organization to support local LEAs with investigations.
Sent the notes from the debrief meeting with Jim and Amy. OK would like to look into the option of SANEs shipping SAKs to the labs. Jim recommended they meet with the SC from Dallas and Amy will connect them with a SANE from Travis County for shipping SAKs to the labs.
Oklahoma developed guidelines for LEAs for the process to retrieve and deliver the SAK to the lab and encouraged local LEAs to adapt the guidelines for internal policies and procedures as recommended by Jim and Amy during the discussion. Connect OK with SC from Dallas and SANE from Travis County.
Obtained contact information for the Site Coordinator from Austin to discuss how they ship SAKs to the lab. Reached out to the SC who indicated that she is not aware of LEAs shipping SAKs to the lab but will verify with the labs. Might not be a resource for this situation depending on the response from the labs. Check-in with SC from Austin about the response from the labs.
Reached out to the SANE nurse from Travis County, Jenny Black, as recommended by Amy Durall to setup a meeting with the OK team to discuss shipping SAKs to the labs. Scheduled the call for Friday, October 30th at 12pm ET. Attend call with Jenny Black.
Meeting with Jenny Black, Director of Forensic Nursing for Travis County, to discuss how SAKs are shipped to the crime labs.
