NRRC Technical-Assistance Quick Chat Proposal
Adult Mentoring and Community-Based Programs Track
DRAFT

Date: TBD
Issue: Innovative models to adult mentoring, approved by BJA
Guests: Two Grantees (e.g., Father Matters and Family Pathfinders) and either an SME (e.g., Genevieve Rimer, CEO) or a JLUSA Navigator (e.g., Lester Young).
Facilitator: Roger Jarjoura
Coaches: Derrick Franke and Joe Williams
Producers: Felice and Shoshana
Target Audience: BJA & OJJDP SCA Grantees

Purpose:
Share perspectives regarding a continuum of effective strategies for adult mentoring ranging from traditional face to face mentoring to virtual approaches. Grantees have various degrees of mentoring approaches in the Adult Mentoring and Community-Based Programs Track and may benefit from learning about innovations in virtual mentoring approaches – and its benefits and challenges-in light of current restrictions on face to face mentoring activities. Recognizing that mentoring is a special focus among Community-Based Reentry grantees, our coaches have indicated that other SCA grantees would also benefit from this TA opportunity. NRRC proposes a Quick Chat format to allow for an immediate and interactive opportunity for a facilitated conversation and open dialogue about this topic across all SCA tracks.

Format:
The NRRC will use a 75-minute quick chat format. To help guide the conversation, the NRRC facilitator will pose 3-5 questions to invited guests and manage a Q&A from the audience. We would start with SME Expert XXX setting the stage and framing the conservation. We would then feature two grantees – Father Matters and Family Pathfinders – where each would describe their mentoring components and face to face and virtual approaches. The proposed grantees for this Chat are described below:

1. Father Matters -- 2017-CY-BX-0115 (Technical Assistance Partnership of Arizona – Father Matters Adult Reentry Program)

The goal of Family Matters is to support community-and faith-based organizations in developing and implementing comprehensive and collaborative programs that support people who are reentering communities from incarceration and are at medium to high risk of reoffending. The grant provides reentry services to 150 men (at medium-high risk to re-offend) being released from Arizona DOC-Lewis Prison to Maricopa County under community supervision.

Communities play an important role in making sure their families are successful. The Father Matters Adult Reentry Mentoring Project (FMARP) works in developing supportive communities committed to the success of the returning citizen and their family with the Community Awareness and Readiness Collective (CARC). CARC is an evidence based, multi-disciplinary group of individuals from the community who focus on preparing and engaging communities for the return of recently released citizens back into their neighborhoods. Among other services, Second Chance Act funding supports weekly mentoring groups at the Arizona Department of Corrections’ Lewis Prison for medium to high risk men. Upon release, a Father Matters case manager connects returning citizens with trained volunteer community mentors who work with mentees for six months following release. Mentors include other formerly incarcerated individuals who have successfully completed FMARP. The project is part of a randomized controlled trial serving 150 participants, measuring reentry outcomes for those who receive mentoring versus a control group who receive standard Arizona Department of Corrections reentry programming.

2. Family Pathfinders -- 2018-CY-BX-0033 (Family Pathfinders of Tarrant County, Inc. – Second Chance Reentry Program)

Family Pathfinders of Tarrant County, Inc. provides pre- and post-release case management, randomized mentoring, employment services, and family reunification to 175 individuals incarcerated in the Tarrant County Jail-based Intensive Day Treatment program who are returning to live in Tarrant County. Pathfinders’ Mentoring program has been recognized as a Best Practice by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Mentors walk alongside their clients as they learn how to better manage their money, attain career or education goals and become financially stable. Pathfinders current Second Chance program is conducting an experimental study of mentoring by comparing the 12-month recidivism rates between participants who have been randomly assigned to 1) case management, family reunification and employment services, or 2) case management, family reunification, employment services and mentoring.

Roger would guide the discussion and facilitate the Q and A. The final recording will be shared with grantees unable to make the quick chat. If appropriate, the Center will produce a FAQ document that can be posted alongside the podcast recording.

Invitation:
The quick chat will be made available to SCA grantees, NRRC staff, partners, subject-matter experts, BJA and OJJDP.
