Center staff are planning its annual Statewide Drug Court Roundtable. The roundtable, scheduled for October 22-23, is typically held at the Center's New York Office. Due to the emergence of the covid-19 pandemic, this year's iteration will occur virtually via a video-conferencing platform. The roundtable will cover various topics of relevance in the drug court field like racial and ethnic disparities, opioid substance use, and incentives and sanctions. This year's roundtable will also include a discussion or presentation about the impact the covid-19 pandemic has had on drug court networks around the nation. Other aspects of the roundtable include panel discussions, discussion forums and updates from federal agencies and other T/TA providers.

Center staff Annie Schachar has held several conference calls with the coordinators' collaborative, consisting of coordinators Noreen Plumage of North Dakota and Monica Kagey of Ohio, to begin planning this year's conference. Ms. Schachar has also held conference calls with Greg Torain, Policy Adviser of BJA to ensure the roundtable includes BJA priority areas.
On October 22-23, Center staff hosted its annual Statewide Problem-Solving Court Coordinators’ Workshop via video-conferencing platform Zoom. Ordinarily, this two-day convening occurs in-person at the Center for Court Innovation’s New York office, but due to the covid-19 pandemic, the workshop was held virtually, in compliance with federal social distancing guidelines. In addition to incorporating BJA’s priority areas, Center staff surveyed statewide drug court coordinators to include subject matter relevant to their drug courts. Day one of the workshop included policy and award updates from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, an announcement from the National Association of Drug Court Professionals’ (NADCP) regarding their partnership with the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) to survey state-level medication assisted treatment, and a specialized presentation on risk-need- responsivity by Center staff Caitlin Flood and Suvi Lambson. Day two of the workshop’s content included two presentations on inclusivity in treatment courts by Dr. Corrie Vilsaint and Darryl Turpin and an update from statewide drug court coordinators in Ohio and Oregon on their use of American University’s RED Assessment Tool. Dr. Corrie Vilsaint, a principle investigator at the Recovery Research Institute and Center for Addiction Medicine and a research fellow at Harvard Medical School, presented on recovery science and its implications for special populations. Darryl Turpin, the co-principal of Habilitation Empowerment Accountability Therapy (H.E.A.T.) and Habilitation Empowerment Recovery (H.E.R.) drug court treatment curriculums for African-American men and women, respectively, presented on the African-American experience in drug courts and how programs like H.E.A.T. and H.E.R. can improve outcomes among Black participants. Both days of the conference also included facilitated breakout groups where coordinators discussed the information gained from that day’s presentation(s) and applied it to their states’ treatment court programs. The workshop was attended by over 35 coordinators.
