Questions?

Submitted by James Lah on

Violent crime is a significant problem in the Northern District of Alabama. One of the larger cities in our District is Anniston. Members of the law enforcement community and government officials in Anniston wish to combat the violent crime problem there by initiating a Drug Market Intervention (DMI) approach. Therefore, the Northern District of Alabama is seeking assistance from NTTAC to receive DMI training, preferably from the National Network for Safe Communities. The Northern District of Alabama would also like to incorporate two other cities, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, in the DMI training.

How do you anticipate that the requested assistance will address the problems?
It is anticipated that training on Drug Market Intervention (DMI) and the subsequent implementation of a DMI strategy in the Northern District of Alabama will reduce the violent crime problem plaguing our district. DMI is a program modeled off the one used in High Point, North Carolina. The orignal intervention in High Point eliminated drug markets citywide and reduced violent crime in the first neighborhood in which it was applied by 57%. Given the sucess of DMI at High Point, the Northern District of Alabama wishes to employ this strategy in Anniston, Alabama, and incorporate our work in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. DMI unifies drug dealers, their families, law enforcement and criminal justice officials, service providers, and community leaders. These groupos work together to eliminate local drug markets, to arrest and prosecute violent drug dealers, to offer non-violent dealers with education and job placement, and to establish clear, predictable, and meaningful consequences for those who re-offend.
