Hosted the 2019 Young Adults Retreat in Moab, UT, July 28 – August 1. 24 young adults participated in the three-day event for children, stepchildren, and siblings (ages 18-25) of fallen firefighters. The year’s retreat combined challenging outdoor experiences with facilitated conversations and discussions regarding loss and grief and included activities designed to promote useful lifelong coping skills. Participants challenge themselves, by stepping out of their comfort zones, enjoy nature through hiking, rafting and horseback riding. All attendees agreed that Moab was the perfect “non-traditional” setting special bonds were formed during group sessions and it is evident that these supportive connections will last a lifetime. The retreat provides opportunities for family members to connect with peers who have had similar experiences. Only positive comments were made about the Young Adult Retreat, as participants stated that they absolutely love it and it allows them to make great connections to others who have experienced the loss of a firefighter.

Quotes from attendees:
“I can’t express how attending this event the last two years has boosted me through my grief process, way more than the seven years before. This has changed me for the better”.
“This was by far my favorite NFFF event that I have attended. I loved having outdoor activities half the day, group sessions for a few hours, and free time built in to connect and talk outside of structured time. I loved having both challenging and fun activities that allowed us to grow and create memories together and feel so cared for. I loved everything—the hikes, rafting, riding, connecting with others, taking in the scenery. It was so wonderful to be able to relax, play, reflect, and have this time to feel safe to talk about anything without worrying and be ourselves”.
“The NFFF does such an amazing job sponsoring this for the young adults. I truly would not be where I am today without the connections I’ve made through the organization. I am so thankful for this opportunity and blessed that this is available”.
