We are putting together a peer support program for our Officers and we need initial training to get started. Our officers are faced with stressful incidents and we need additional tools and resources to help them deal with problems and return to work. Our new policy incorporates group debriefings and individual counseling with mental health providers. We also have options and resources for religious counseling if the employee wishes. We would like to add the option of peer support, particularly when it involves a critical incident which involves lethal force. Helping the officers through these difficult times and getting them back to a healthy state is good for the citizens, department, and the officer. Peer support groups are a growing trend in Law Enforcement and it has many benefits. Our work group has been building the frame work through policy development for the past six months. It is critical that we have proper training for the officers prior to implementing this program. Our City is located about 30-40 miles west of the greater Kansas City area. There is an instructor in the Kansas City area however we do not have the budget to cover the expense of the trainer. We have facilities at our training center that can be used to hold the training. We anticipate approximately 15 officers from our agency will attend the training. Our local Sheriff's Office, Douglas County Kansas Sheriff's office is also developing their peer support group and would participate in the training. They anticipate another 15 officers for a total of 30 people. These 30 individuals would provide peer support for both of our agencies which consist of approximately 300 sworn officers total.

5.15.13; Spoke to Captain Dan Ward...Lawrence PD is about an hour from Johnson County where another TA request came in for Peer Support Training and St. Petersburg College has been engaged. Captain Ward stated that he would like to have training in the Fall. Called Laura Heisler at SP College and she said that they could take this TA as well and do a back to back training with Lawrence PD and Johnson County PD. I sent Laura the contact information and when she contacts Captain Ward, I will close this request. Sent Captain Ward and e-mail informing him that the provider will make contact. Laura Heisler made contact with the requester on 5.28.13 and so request is being closed out as it has been referred to St. Petersburg College.
