Sent monthly check-in email to Fresno.
It was very nice meeting those of you who attended the Grantees Meeting last week. Below I have provided a list of the items we discussed for your review. I have provided either answers and/or next steps on how to move forward. Please let me know if I have left anything out, or if you have any other comments or questions.
This email will also serve as our monthly check-in email, so please let me know if there is anything else you would like to discuss, if you have any TTA (training or technical assistance) needs at this time, or if you have any successes that you would like to share. I would be happy to hop on a conference call with you if it would be easier to discuss these items over the phone.
Feedback from the West Coast Training:
Would you be willing to provide your feedback from this training in writing? Or, I will pass along the comments I received directly from you and from Julia if you would prefer.
Technical Assistance topics that were mentioned at the meeting:
Victim Engagement/Victim Advocate
Crime Analysts
What other TTA requests do you have? We can start nailing down topics to discuss at the site visit scheduled for the week of August 26th.
Violent Criminal Behavior Analysis Seminar:
We will need to check with Dawn on this to make sure it’s OK to use SAKI funding. I have sent her an email and will follow up with you as soon as she responds.
SAFER National Best Practices Guide for Sexual Assault Kits:
I thought this would be a good resource for your site as it provides detailed information on a few of the items we touched on in our discussions (just in case you have not seen it)

Possible reimbursement for the 100 kits that were retested/make sure Fresno is in good standing with BJA Award:
If you can provide a summary of the details regarding this question, I will send it directly to Dawn so we can get an exact answer.
We could also have a phone conversation with her to discuss further. Let me know what you prefer.

Desiree, Det. Alexander and Det. Macias requested funding to send three individuals to the Violent Criminal Behavior Analysis Seminar held the week of August 26th. This is the same week as the site visit and I am waiting to hear back from them on if we need to reschedule the site visit to accommodate the training. I am still waiting to hear back from Dawn on if they are able to use their funding for this training or not.
Fresno also wanted BJA to know that Fresno did not request reimbursement for the “100” kits that were submitted to the lab. The kits that were found untested during an inventory required by SAKI and CA DOJ have been sent off and paid for by our department. ZERO SAKI funds were used for this testing. We mentioned to Lisa and Julia only to avoid procurement issues if any questions were asked about the SAKI inventory we submitted.
Dawn confirmed that everything is OK with their SAKs and since SAKI funds were not used for testing that everything is good with regards to any procurement issues. Fresno was notified.

I hope this email finds you well. I am reaching out for our monthly check-in on your progress and to ask if there are any training and technical assistance needs that you have at this time. These check-ins are an effort to facilitate regular communication and make sure that your site is receiving the training and technical assistance you need.
Have you had any recent success stories that you would like to share with BJA or the SAKI TTA team? This could include any specific achievements, goals, milestones or challenges addressed that you would consider successes under the SAKI project as well as news stories on arrests or convictions.
I understand that crime analysis is an area of focus for your site, and I am happy to assist in setting up TA and training in this area. Please let me know how you would like to move forward on this, or if you have already started looking into options for this subject.
If you have any questions or concerns or would like to request additional training or technical assistance, please let me know!
Detective Cooney replied:
We too hope this email finds you doing well. My apologies for not getting back to you right away. Currently we are in no need of any training and/or technical assistance. I’m scheduled to attend ViCAP training next week and we have some upcoming conferences.
As for success stories, yes, we do have those. However, we’re awaiting a suspect to be extradited from back east and once he’s in our custody, we’ll update SAKI with that story. We have other cases in which we anticipate further arrests within the coming months.
In regards to the Crime Analyst, we’ve been in contact with some trainers and are attempting to coordinate some specialized training to not just us SAKI folks, but hopefully department wide.
And finally, since we’re attending a few conferences already, we won’t be attending the 2019 SA Reform Workshop.
As always, thanks for the “check in” and please take care…
