The Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) training was an all-day interactive training focused on Community Drug Awareness. Attendees started the morning by learning the essential definitions relating to addiction and drug use. The trainer then lead them through the 7 main categories of drugs; what each is, what it does and the basic signs of overdose. Methamphetamines, and heroine were highlighted, proving participants with a more in-depth understating of the drugs and the trends in their state. The morning session concluded with an interactive activity that brought together all of the information that had been covered. The afternoon was spent focuses on opioids. Attendees learned about the 7 different types of opioids, how they affect the brain, why they are so addictive, and how to recognize signs of an overdose. They then learned more about the trends of use and overdose within their state, the native population and nation-wide. The second half of the afternoon focused on both community solutions and medical treatments for opioid addiction. The training ended with an interactive planning activity where participants spent time in groups identifying a specific goal and a few objectives that would address drug addiction in their community. They then explored existing resources and how these resources could be expanded to reach their goal. Next steps and concrete objectives were established by each group and recoded by the trainer. The results of this planning activity have since been sent back to the community to use and a starting point for enhancing their communities ability to address drug addiction.
