SEARCH staff successfully assisted the Denton (TX) Police Department in a stalking and harassment investigation. SEARCH staff was contacted by a detective with a Facebook page that was being used to harass a victim. Screenshots of confidential medical information was shared via Facebook. SEARCH staff assisted the Denton Police Department with how to preserve the Facebook account as well as how to send legal process to Facebook for subscriber information, not only on the initial target Facebook page, but also on a second attached Facebook page. Once legal process was returned, SEARCH staff again assisted in translating the information in the return to secondary investigative steps. Both Facebook returns contained identifying information that showed that the same device (identified by an advertising identification number) was used on both accounts. Also SEARCH staff walked the detective through how to trace the IP addresses that were returned as these were IPv6 addresses and the detective had never seen these before. Once the IP addresses were traced to an ISP, SEARCH staff assisted the detective with how to serve the ISP with legal process to get further identifying information.
