The focus of this session is on the types of evidence-based strategies affect the four major ways that crimes concentrate—people, places, patterns, and problems—and the types of analysis that inform those strategies. This discussion includes related concepts like hot spot policing, problem-oriented policing, intelligence-led policing, focused deterrence, and CPTED, and fits them into a comprehensive model of analysis and response. Analysts learn not only how things work in an ideal agency, but how they can slowly move their agencies towards an ideal model by creating and effectively disseminating excellent analytical products that cover each of the four “Ps”. Along the way, we discuss solutions to several common obstacles such as data access and management, institutional apathy or hostility, and lack of professional development opportunities.
