In the 2018 Check-In Call, Coreylyn (the attorney prosecuting the SAKI cases) said that now that all their kits have been tested, they are really going to start prosecuting cases soon. She would love to have a training where AEquitas worked with their team on strategies for these tough cases.
Recommendation: A 1-2 day in person training with AEquitas. They have about 10-12 staff in the Sexual Assault Division that would attend. SAKI TTA to determine if AEquitas is available the week that the JAX SAO is proposing for the training. Get approval from SAKI TTA PIs that the training can proceed.
Paige notified the JAX SAO that the training had been cleared to proceed. She asked questions about the length of the event and the agenda topics. Paige recommended that on one of the days they also have a session that had been requested by JSO on testifying for cold case sexual assault. Or, they could even look at having a 'Victim Advocates as Expert Witnesses' training. JAX SAO agreed to the 1 day for 'strategies for prosecuting cold case SA' and 1 day for other prosecution topics.
Paige is getting a proposed agenda from AEquitas.
Paige had a call with AEquitas about the proposed agenda, and then, had a few questions for JAX SAO about the half day training sessions. Coreylyn and Paige discussed what type of 'testifying' training would be helpful for their multidisciplinary partners. Paige recommended they make it more applicable to victim advocates and forensic medical personnel by having an introduction to expert witnesses. They think this will achieve what JSO would want in a testifying training.
Paige sent proposed agendas to Coreylyn and AEquitas. Finalize Agenda
Upon receiving revisions from AEquitas, Paige revised the Agenda and sent it back to Coreylyn. Coreylyn thought it looked great in this format and was going to start recruiting folks from JSO and the MDT for the second day.
Agenda Draft Ready for CCR Submission. Paige to assist with the CCR submission.
Paige called Coreylyn to see if she thought it made sense to keep this event as a training, or if it would be more helpful to the site for it to be converted to a TA event. Paige thought that a more interactive, technical assistance style event would be more helpful to the site so they could talk more about their challenges over receiving presentation style changes.
Coreylyn thought this sounded good. She confirmed with Adair (head prosecutor) that not having a set agenda and doing more discussion would be good for them to be able to work through their challenges.
Jane Anderson and Patti Powers from AEquitas facilitated a 2 day event. The first day was a prosecutor only day, and the second day was multidisciplinary. The site said it went wonderfully. They were energized and had a great experience. There were 10 attendees for day 1 and 23 for day 2 including 6 SANE participants.
JAX SAO sent the evaluations to Paige to review.
