Under this grant, part of NACDL’s mission is to increase access to training resources for public defense practitioners. As the national need for training assistance is significant and NACDL cannot offer live trainings at every locale in need, NACDL is committed to creating webinars on topics of interest and import for defense attorneys to access. NACDL is in the process of creating an appellate webinar focused on three aspects of appellate work: (1) information gathering, case assessment/review, identifying and selecting appellate issues, and drafting questions presented/assignments of error; (2) persuasion in both brief writing and oral argument; and (3) the unique ethical challenges of appellate practice including attorney-client relations, decision-making, the use of Anders briefs and concluding representation. The webinars will be recorded at the NACDL office on March 15, 2018. The three speakers have already been identified, a draft schedule has been created, and training objectives have been assigned.
