Urban, and cosponsors the Bureau of Justice Assistance and The Pew Charitable Trusts, hosted a conference aimed to improve the quality, consistency, and use of performance measures across JRI states.
The Urban Institute serves as the main point of contact for the Justice Reinvestment Initiative for potential sites. In that role, Urban monitors a JRI email address, through which it fields questions from potential JRI sites. Urban also responds to media inquiries and general questions from academics and practitioners about JRI.
Steering committee members participated in a call to discuss a preview of the JRI reinvestment strategy session, upcoming Urban publications and convenings, and partner updates.
Steering committee members met to discuss swift, certain, and fair sanctions with Angela Hawken, racial, ethnic, and gender disparity in JRI, and lessons learned from New York's strategies to reduce the prison population.
Steering committee members met to do a deep dive into property and drug reforms in states and discuss implementation strategies and lessons learned from TA providers, how to engage with advocates and champions, the smart on juvenile justice states, potential convenings and events in 2016, and site selection.
We will conduct analyses looking at the impact of the Affordable Care Act on recidivism. To accomplish this, we are identifying a state system which is supportive of data linkage --and are currently pursuing CA, OH, and PA as target states. We will then need to obtain approvals from leadership, institutional review boards, and then ultimately conduct these analyses.
We are performing a sub-analysis of the Transitions Clinic Network, which was award a Healthcare Innovation Award from the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Innovation to improve health and reduce costs for individuals leaving prisons and returning to the community health systems. We will explore how early engagement in primary care (direct referral from prison; referral within 4 weeks, and having 2 or more visits to primary care) impact return to jail or prison.
