This virtual “brown bag” discussion will bring together capital case and homicide prosecutors across the country virtually to discuss hate crimes and mass violence, specifically including a brief presentation on the Portland Train Attack. Attendees will workshop the issue with their peers and discuss potential outcomes and their own experiences in that area.

This conference is a regional in-person conference hosted in Athens, Georgia with the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia. The conference highlighted various topics to improve the prosecution of capital and capital-eligible cases. APA provided assistance with space rental, A/V, and other associated costs, and additionally provided travel/lodging/per diem for out-of-state presenters.

This webinar is a case study of the Urbanski trial--a racially-motivated killing of University of Maryland senior Richard Collins III, who was Black, in 2017. The lead prosecutor of this case will provide insights into how the case proceeded and the obstacles that were encountered in trying to prosecute this homicide as a hate crime. Attendees will be allotted time at the end of the presentation for questions. Scheduling of this webinar will depend on presenter(s) schedules.

Center staff organized and hosted an in-person site visit to Miwa Kato, the Director of Operations for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and Baz Dreisinger, Executive Director of Incarceration Nations Network. At the site visit, attendees learned about Red Hook Community Justice Center's model of problem-solving and community justice in hopes of bringing information back to her colleagues at the UN as well as with other practitioners in the international community.

The site visit included a tour of MCC, an update on programming during COVID-19 pandemic, and a discussion on future programming at MCC.
