Chris sent a list of all SAKI TTA partners and the topics for which each member can provide TTA. Chris explained a few logistical details regarding potentially setting up a training for Iowa, and told Mike that a phone call can be scheduled should he choose to move forward with any of those options.
Reached out to Matt Opsommer for a monthly TA check-in.
Hold call with Nick to provide overview of SAKI TTA and offer opportunity for Nick to ask us questions.
The BYOC training programs provide intensive training to capital defense teams using the proven "Bring-Your-Own-Case" method. Capital defense is an extraordinarily demanding and complex practice that, when done poorly, represents one of the greatest continuing threats to the right to counsel in today’s criminal justice system. A capital case consists not of one trial, but two - a guilt phase and a penalty phase. Because of the irrevocability of capital punishment, capital cases constitutionally demand unique levels of investigation and preparation by defense counsel.
The Center expands the capacity of four (4) mentor courts (Hartford, CT; San Francisco, CA; Orange County, CA; and Dallas, TX) to provide technical assistance to other practitioners.
Under this grant, part of NACDL’s mission is to increase access to training resources for public defense practitioners. As the national need for training assistance is significant and NACDL cannot offer live trainings at every locale in need, NACDL is committed to creating webinars on topics of interest and import for defense attorneys to access.

By working with consultants from the Harris County Public Defender’s Office, NACDL is completing a pretrial release manual tailored to the specific legal framework and Harris County’s defense bar’s needs and challenges. The manual includes a discussion of fundamental bail issues and case law, practice guidelines and checklists for effective bail advocacy, a catalog of Harris County's laws and procedures, sample pleadings, applicable risk-assessment tools, and cites to available resources within the jurisdiction.
