NAICJA staff met with the consultant, Amanda White Eagle, on September 8, 12, and 26 , 2023. On September 26, NAICJA conducted a webinar titled “Perpetual Punishment: Understanding and Addressing Collateral Consequences in Indian Country”. NAICJA is preparing a webinar summary.

TLPI staff, NAICJA staff and consultants collaborated to conducted a webinar “Tribal Healing to Wellness: Developing a Native Veterans Court” on Wednesday, November 14, 2023, to discuss HTWC models for veterans courts particularly the development of the Yurok Veterans Wellness Court.Veterans Webinar with TLPI "An Overview of Legal Issues and Support for Native American and Alaskan Native Veterans"

E5: Utilizing Existing Tribal Court Systems Data to Increase Outcomes and Identify Areas of Support

NAICJA staff, Johanna Farmer and Mary Rodriguez, submitted a presentation proposal that was selected for the 2023 Legal Symposium. NAICJA will share their work on the policy project regarding collateral consequences and their inherent role in preventing access to housing in Indian Country. Conference registration is waived for the day the staff presents.

Title: Perpetual Punishment: Impacts of Criminal Justice System Involvement on Housing

NAICJA staff Johana Farmer, and consultant, Ms. White Eagle, presented on collateral consequences at the National Tribal Judicial and Court Personnel Conference on October 24, 2023. All NTJCP conference participants received a copy of the Policy Guide on Collateral Consequences.

NAICJA staff co-presented on October 25, 2023 on “Native American and Alaska Native Veterans: Justice Outreach, Legal Assistance and Services, Veteran Courts” with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (Veteran Justice Outreach and Legal Services) and the AllRise’s Justice for Vets at NAICJA’s 54th National Tribal Judicial and Court Personnel conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Proposed Activity: NAICJA proposes to conduct two (2), two-day Roundtable Conferences – one in Anchorage, Alaska, and one in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with proposed sessions outlined below.

NAICJA staff and consultants presented and attended the “Veterans’ Outreach and Legal Assistance Roundtable Outcomes” and “Bridging the Gap between Native Veterans Residing in Rural “Legal Deserts” and Legal Service Providers in Other Locations,” at the Enhancement HTWC training on September 12-13, 2023, in Palm Springs, CA.

Provided RNR & CCAT Training to 16 individuals from Tuscon and Wilmington courts.

Center staff provided training to 10 individuals from Tacoma, WA and Arlington, TX
