Effective Strategies to Investigate and Prosecute Labor Trafficking in the United States

This two-and-a-half-day training—funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance and sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and AEquitas—will educate participants on how to identify victims of labor trafficking, as well as share best practices for investigating and prosecuting labor trafficking crimes.

In-person workshop at IACP 2019 Conference on "Effective Approaches to Combatting Human Trafficking": Promising practices demonstrate that human trafficking is best addressed with a multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach combining the efforts of local, state, and federal law enforcement, prosecutors, victim services providers, and other key stakeholders. This workshop will illustrate the benefits of applying these practices to address both forced labor and sex trafficking at the local level, through frontline examples of successes of these critical partnerships.

In collaboration with sub-grantee AEquitas, the IACP is partnering to deliver a workshop at the Cook County Human Trafficking Task Force Conference on human trafficking out of prisons, titled "The Prison Pipeline: Recruitment from the Criminal Justice System," on Thursday, August 8, 2019.

In-person delivery of 2.5-day training on Labor Trafficking Investigations and Prosecutions for Law Enforcement and Prosecutors to enhance law enforcement and prosecutors' ability to successfully identify, investigate, and prosecute labor trafficking cases, in St. Louis County, Missouri, in collaboration with the St. Louis County Police Department, utilizing the facility of the Maryland Heights Police Department.

Throughout the period of January 2019 through June 2019, this project received and addressed, via email and phone communication, requests for information on anti-human trafficking training, technical assistance, and resources. The project staff tracked, addressed, and has kept record of all requests addressed through funding from award 2017-VT-BX-K101.

Received a TA request from the Survive and Thrive Advocacy Center in Tallahassee, FL requesting assistance regarding the development and revision of a victim-centered, trauma informed model response policy for law enforcement. They have been working in collaboration with the Leon county Sheriff's Office in the development of a human trafficking policy for sworn deputies regarding identification and follow-up protocols.
