In 1995, C.O.P.S. began offering the highly-acclaimed trainings called “Traumas of Law Enforcement” to prepare law enforcement agencies to provide counseling and peer support following line-of-duty deaths and other law enforcement tragedies such as disability and suicide. An extensive curriculum on death notification, handling a line-of-duty death, law enforcement suicide, the emotionally affected officer, and the disabled officer are all taught at these trainings. In 2019, we began making peer support and counseling referrals available to the officers attending the training.

An integrated and comprehensive week of memorial activities that honor the memory of the officers lost in the line of duty, and building the basis for law enforcement survivors to understand ways they can begin to rebuild their shattered lives. C.O.P.S. Survivor's Conference includes over 70 counseling and debriefing sessions facilitated by professional counselors and peer support staff each year.

The Local Assistance State Team (LAST) training program has held in Topeka, KS. Eight fire officers trained on how to assist the department and families when a line-of-duty death occurs. The meeting examined the efforts of the LAST program and discussed ways to increase our involvement with the claim process for PSOB cases.

Local Assistance State Team training is for fire service volunteers who assist departments when a line-of-duty death occurs. The services offer a range from assisting with panning the funeral, supporting the department and family, and filing for PSOB, state and local benefits.
