The American Indian Justice Conference offers tribes across the nation an opportunity to learn strategies to enhance tribal justice systems while providing essential information on topics such as court planning and development, diversionary court programs, traditional dispute resolution, justice system responses to alcohol and substance abuse, and emerging issues that are relevant to tribal justice system development.

This month's cohort call is focused on the Good Road of Life model along with facilitated dicussion and peer exchange. The Good Road of Life is a trauma-informed, culture and resilience-based curriculum that utilizes peer support to overcome multiple risk factors including historical and everyday trauma. The model uses Dr. Clayton Small’s dissertation study completed at Gonzaga University that focused on wellness and healing for Native people.

This webinar focuses on federal prosecution and availability of resources to address youth reentry as well as how these resource influence charging decisions at the federal and state level. Originally scheduled to close in March 2024, Harris County had told their coach that they had applied and received a NCE. The coach even worked with them to redo their timeline for the project to take them through March 2025. Harris County then shared in May 2024 that they still had about $100K left to spend.The coach last met with them in June 2024. Since June the coach has reached out at least 6 times with zero response.

CHJ TA Center leadership proposed and had accepted a session on the integration of deflection and reentry. This session featured the TA Center Director, a SCA grantee (Freedom Life Ministries of NC), and a SME partner from The Fletcher Group. The grantee, SME and TA Director also met with the BJA Policy Advisor to the COSSUP Program, which was represented at the conference. The grantee intends to apply for a COSSUP grant to expand his reentry program to include the deflection model.

CHJ staff and partner SMEs produced and moderated a Workshop on Collaboration between Community-based and Correctional entities, 3 grantee organizations and 5 of their staff and stakeholders presented their experience and successes. CHJ staff facilitated participation of 2 grantee organizations in a Workshop and 1 grantee organization in a Plenary Session. CHJ staff and SMEs produced, hosted and facilitated 3 Breakout sessions with 16 small group topic focused discussions.
