NCCJD staff were asked to participate in this focus group hosted by IACP. The purpose of this focus group is to identify challenges between law enforcement and communities of color and to highlight effective strategies that have been used to develop communities of trust. Focus group participants will be asked to share their experiences in terms of obstacles, successes, and perceptions. This focus group is one step toward the development of a resource highlighting examples of trust, understanding, and collaboration.

Yale Law contacted NCCJD to speak on a panel for this conference. This convening, sponsored by the Justice Collaboratory, explores how policing in the United States will and/or should be affected by the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and the subsequent nationwide protests.NCCJD provided specific input about how disability plays a role and the need for officers to learn how to identify disabilities and how to communicate with such individuals.
