The use and abuse of alcohol among American Indian & Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth is complex and has propagated into a major public health concern across Indian Country. Prevention of underage drinking requires strategies that are developed within the appropriate contexts of the historical, cultural, and social demographic factors of alcohol abuse and other deeply rooted related problems in AI/AN communities.

NCJTC staff will provide training on suicide prevention and reduction of risk factors: alcohol and substance abuse, lethal means restriction and mental health/distress. Presentation will be culturally sensitive and provide education and discussion on historical and intergenerational trauma. The first training will include the Ho-Chunk Family Services planning committee. The second training will include a session at their youth conference.

NCJTC staff will provide suicide prevention training, and education regarding reduction of risk factors such as alcohol and substance abuse, lethal means and mental health/distress. Sessions will be appropriate for middle and high school youth and tailored to include discussion of historical and intergenerational trauma.
