Working with veterans provides an opportunity to support individuals who have served our country. One of the ways this can be done in corrections is the establishment of special programs for incarcerated veterans. RSAT-TTA's recently developed manual on veterans programming is designed to explore the various considerations in establishing a specialized program for incarcerated veterans. This webinar will highlight these considerations, as well as the variety of health and cultural factors, in establishing programming for veterans.

Some veterans struggle with substance use and mental health disorders as well as harm to self and/or others. Many of these men and women are within the justice system in jails and prisons. Understanding their complex and unique issues is essential for both justice treatment and security staff. Having a working knowledge of the military culture, a trauma-informed and military-informed approach to services increase the likelihood of engagement in treatment. Units that serve only veterans within correctional facilities use peers as agents of change.

Veterans' Courts: Community of Practice Session

The January 2020 Tribal Community of Practice will focus on justice systems and services dedicated to veterans. Our discussion will revolve around topics relevant to assisting American Indian veterans that include: historical context of warriors within tribal communities, military cultural competency, combat trauma, and resources/practices geared toward restoration.

Please join the National Criminal Justice Training Center in our dialogue that will encourage idea-sharing to develop well-rounded and informed services for our community members.

Webinar - Innovative Programming for Veterans in the Criminal Justice System

Veterans who are incarcerated have unique needs for services, which often include behavioral health treatment. In response, some correctional facilities have developed programming tailored for veterans in their facilities and have curated partnerships with justice programs in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' Veterans Health Administration to better serve them.
