Apply for a Research Assistantship with the National Institute of Justice

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is now offering doctoral students the opportunity to gain experience and professional development with its annual assistantship.

Highly qualified students will be able to obtain research experience by working across offices and program areas within NIJ. NIJ will provide funds to participating universities to pay salaries and other costs.

NW3C conducted a student focus group on the campus of Fairmont State University. The goal of the focus group was to discuss current and emerging technologies (e.g., cellphone apps, gaming systems, social media, etc.) that are being used by young adults. The information gathered is used to inform various research projects and publications, including law enforcement alerts.

NCCJD met with BJS staff regarding BJS reports that track number of people with disabilities in prisons and jails. During the meeting BJS staff requested review of screening instrument/survey regarding disability issues.

NCCJD Director, Leigh Ann Davis, was invited to participate in a work group that planned and presented at AAIDD's National Goals in Research, Practice and Policy for People with I/DD within the "Access to Justice" topic group. The meeting's outcomes resulted in two publications - an Issue Brief as well as an AAIDD journal article co-authored by Ms. Davis.

NCCJD staff reviewed Arlington Police Department's Mental Health Update training to ensure people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, such as autism, were included in the training. As a result, the title of the training changed from “Mental Health” update training to “Mental Health/Mental Illness and IDD training.

NCCJD staff facilitated an in-person focus group meeting with Fort Worth Police Department with support from DOJ's National Initiative for Building Community Trust and Justice. The purpose of this focus group/meeting is to examine potential partnerships and needs related to mental health and disabilities (specifically looking at Mental Illness and Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities) in Fort Worth and is related to the National Initiative.
