The Flint, Michigan Police Department (PD), as part of the Flint Violence Reduction Network (VRN) site, requested an assessment of the city's gang violence issues. Dr. Charles Katz and Dr. Andrew Fox were selected as the providers for this engagement and conducted a preliminary study to determine if a comprehensive gang assessment is necessary and viable. On February 2 - 3, 2017, Dr. Katz and Dr.
The use of social media provides opportunities and challenges for gang investigators. This training will explore the need for agencies to create and update departmentwide policies on the use of social media in gang investigations. It will also provide instruction on open source sites, fee-based sites, apps, and emerging trends in social media. The instructors will provide training on how to effectively use these tools in gathering gang intelligence and assisting with gang investigations. Course instruction will be based on facilitated discussion.
Over the next two years the Arizona PSN site will be implementing a focused deterrence project related to violent gangs. Lt. John White was assigned to this project after the project was submitted and has little background on the pulling levers theory or focused deterrence. After attending the PSN Partner Orientation Course here in Phoenix he was invited to both Fresno and Kansas City to meet with the officers and stakeholders involved in the project and observe a call in meeting to see not only how the meetings are ran, but logistics involved in setting a meeting up.
This class is being offered to law enforcement professionals from the Contra Costa County, California area. Law enforcement officers from this area will be given priority for attendance. This class will provide advanced gang training to:
• Street gang investigators and intelligence analysts currently assigned to gang investigations, with a recommended two to five years of experience in gang investigations.
Provider delivered two day training on "Characteristics of Armed Persons" to aid law enforcement in the recognition, prevention, and suppression of violent gang crimes within the requestor's jurisdiction. BJA NTTAC paid only for travel costs; the requestor paid for the trainer's time and training materials.
