Case synopsis of a Transnational Gift Card Scam laundering $26 million in fraudulently obtained gift cards through major retailers across the United States. Suspects were targeting victims with multiple different scams (Grandparent Scam, Arrest Warrant Scam, Apple Scam, Norton Anti-virus Scam, Publishers Clearing House Scams, and more). Victims were told to purchase Walmart and Target gift cards and provide the card information over the phone to the Scammers. Scammers would electronically transmit the cards to money mules across the U.S.

Cybercriminals in clearnet and darknet spaces often use tools like encrypted communication platforms in the commission of cybercrimes. This webinar introduces participants to various encrypted communication platforms and their use by online threat actors. Participants will gain technical knowledge of encrypted communication platforms and gain practical knowledge on how to conduct investigations that involve these platforms.

In 2011, FBI agents were concluding a routine liaison visit with officials at DuPont Pioneer's offices near Des Moines, Iowa when one of the agents asked if company officials had any unusual activity recently. Specifically, they were looking for anything that may involve targeting the company's intellectual property (IP). The company official subsequently detailed a recent incident where an Asian male had been found digging in one of their grower fields. Grower fields operate like laboratories where companies can test their products.

In 2024, one of the first cybercrime cases to make the news involved the virtual kidnapping of a Chinese student in the United States. Using this incident as a case study, this webinar critically examines the case and identifies how this new case compares to past virtual kidnapping incidents in the United States. Special attention is paid to the tactics, tools, targets, and modus operandi of virtual kidnappers who target U.S. victims.

In this webinar, we will explore the features in Autopsy that can be used to triage a system. We will start with a brief intro to Autopsy then look at the following Triage features: Ingest File Filters/Profiles, Autopsy Live Triage Drive and Autopsy Logical Imager. NW3C will send staff Justin Parker, training manager to present at the 2024 National Fusion Center Association (NFCA) Training Event in Washington, DC. The intent was to raise awareness on FREE training resources and technical assistance available by BJA, IIR, and NW3C. Additionally, the panel wanted to facilitate a discussion on training needs and to determine what's working, what needs fixed, and what's broken in respect to national training offerings for local and state law enforcement.

The 2024 National Fusion Center Association (NFCA) Analyst Summit was held in Washington DC on 25 March, prior to the NFCA Annual Training Event. Attendees, primarily analysts, from across the National Network of Fusion Centers and other federal partners are the target audience for this event. NNFC Analyst Council Vice Chair Jaime Morse, NY State Police - NY State Intelligence Center, was the lead planner for the 2024 Summit and requested a 45-minute training block on Intelligence Requirements. The overall event was attended by approximately 220 individuals.
