In September, the Louisiana team made progress in their data analyses, LADOC policy summaries, and outreach to external stakeholders. The team connected with Vera’s leadership and the internal Reimagining Prison initiative to figure out how Vera can assist the LADOC in repurposing of the cell-blocks at Camp J, a segregation unit, at the Louisiana State Penitentiary that will be closing by early 2018. At the request of LADOC, Vera is in the early stages of consulting socially-conscious architecture firms to explore the feasibility of redesigning restrictive housing units into spaces that advance the states larger missions of reducing the prison population, curtailing reliance on segregation, and bolstering reentry initiatives. The team plans to have a follow up conversation with LADOC leadership including the Secretary to further explore this significant step in Louisiana’s criminal justice reforms. These conversations have the potential to develop into an action-item that Vera and LADOC can pursue together during the implementation phase of the project, and represent a significant opportunity for impactful segregation reduction at the Louisiana State Penitentiary that could serve as a symbolic gesture of the agencies commitment to reform and model for closing/repurposing cell blocks across the prison system with similar architecture.
