On Friday, July 7, 2017 there were a total of 459 inmates in the Thurston County Jail. Of those inmates, 120 were being held for a “drug crime”, 183 were being held for a “property crime” and 171 were being held for a “violent crime”. There were 102 individuals being held on a charge of “simple assault”. This charge was not counted in any of these categories. It should be noted the individuals in-custody may be held on more than one charge and could appear in these groups more than once.
Data within the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office indicates that between July 1, 2016 and July 1, 2017 there were 520 cases “drug crime” charges were filed on. For the same time period there were 774 cases “property crime” charges were filed on and 980 cases “violent crime” charges were filed on. It should be noted that domestic violence charges such as Harassment and No Contact Order violations that don’t meet Washington’s violent crime definition are categorized in the “violent crime” numbers, but could be excluded. Additionally, misdemeanor assaults are included in this number as well. This number does not include misdemeanor cases from Tumwater that are processed by the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
For additional information on crime in Thurston County, you may refer to the Washington Association of Sheriff and Police Chief’s statistics and reports page. There is information about jails as well. A 2016 report indicates that the Thurston County Jail was approximately 95% full during 2016.
