Vera provided implementation TTA to the Oregon DOC in the following ways:
January -
On January 25th, Vera attended a meeting of Oregon's Optimizing Special Housing Unit Beds Workgroup and met with the project's sponsor, Assistant Director of Operations Michael Gower. Vera worked with the group to answer questions, provide assistance as they prioritized Vera's recommendations for implementation, and sent an email following the meeting that included impressions and recommendations for future actions.
February -
During February, Vera program and research staff worked with Site Coordinator Joe Etter to identify appropriate outcome measures for data collection and tracking. We also continued discussing the Vera's recommendations and strategies for developing an implementation plan.
March -
The Vera team worked with Site Coordinator Joe Etter to continue refining the data collection activities and discuss recommendations. Site Lead Allison Hastings also provided Captain Etter with some resources and suggestions regarding mental health first aid training and crisis intervention training for staff.
April -
During phone calls with the Oregon DOC site coordinator, Vera provided guidance on data collection and tracking and helped coach the site coordinator for a presentation he gave to an executive committee regarding implementation. Vera site lead Allison Hastings and program associate Elena Vanko also participated in a call with a Washington Department of Corrections official to learn more about rolling out segregation reforms and preparing staff for culture change, which we hope will be helpful across implementation sites.
