Since its launch in 2010, the RJIP has identified and helped to reform policies and practices that produce racial disparities in local criminal justice systems across the country.
We are now seeking funding to expand the project’s juvenile diversion work in Montgomery County Pennsylvania by providing judicial training on implicit bias and on development of the adolescent mind. The Montgomery County Task Force (MCTF) wants to provide more training to law enforcement and court officials to make youth programs a permanent part of their criminal justice system. This growth can help to turn the contact of youth with the criminal justice system into an experience that can help them to reach their full potential.
On December 18th, 2015 the MCTF will be hosting a conference at the Montgomery County Human Services Center for judges, police officers, and other stakeholders in the county’s juvenile criminal justice system. Experts and leading researchers will present on a myriad of topics relevant to the effective administration of services to juveniles. These topics include the role of implicit bias and how to mitigate its effects, adolescent brain behavior and cognitive development as well as how they are impacted by the criminal justice system, along with evidence based and nationwide best practices in juvenile diversion. MCTF is seeking assistance from BJA NTTAC to help pay for these experts and fund their presentations.
