Between January and June 2024 we facilitated 8 peer connections and 2 consultations: On January 1, 2024 the FY21 JMHCP County of Onondaga, NY, grant team was connected to the Denver, CO, Police Department's Law Enforcement-Mental Health Learning Site, which discussed its Denver STAR program as the grantee was interested in including a non-law enforcement response in their program. Specifically, Denver STAR provided guidance on identifying appropriate calls for service to divert to a civilian response and how they worked through issues within the 911 center. On February 22, 2024, the FY22 JMHCP University of Alabama grant team was connected to FY22 Connect & Protect grantee Clemson University to discuss how the grantees administer and implement their grants as universities, how they work with BJA, and how they have successfully used TTA for their grants. On April 23, 2024, the FY23 JMHCP Judiciary Courts of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and FY23 Judiciary Courts of the State of Arizona both received a peer connection to the Executive Director of Bridges of Colorado and the Statewide Behavioral Health Manager of the Illinois Administrative Office of the Courts for a virtual Court Navigator Workshop. Both grantees were developing a court navigator role as part of their JMHCP FY23 grants, and both states were in the process of creating job responsibilities and qualifications for the role. Colorado and Illinois each have innovative models for court navigator/court liaison roles that engage people with serious mental illness and behavioral health conditions and grantees were able to ask questions and workshop some of the challenges they were experiencing. On April 29, 2024, we connected three sites—FY22 City of Battle Creek, MI; FY20 West Michigan Mental Health System; and FY21 City of Durham, NC—for a peer connection to discuss approaches to setting up a co-responder program and data collection methods for law enforcement/behavioral health collaborations. On May 13, 2024, the FY22 JMHCP Marion County, IN, grant team was connected to the Homeless Court Administrator for the Coalition for the Homeless, who oversees the Homeless Court in Houston, TX, which allowed the grantee to ask questions related to community partnerships, incentives and sanctions, referrals, training and education, data collection, and serving the population of people who are unhoused. Consultations included connecting the FY20 West Michigan Community Mental Health System to the Center for Effective Public Policy for a gender-responsive services consultation with the jail staff on February 8, 2024, and connecting FY22 JMHCP Judiciary Courts of the State of Iowa to staff from other CSG Justice Center projects in Iowa (Stepping Up and Justice Counts) to help the grantee understand the different initiatives happening in the state around behavioral health and criminal justice, especially as the grantee continues to consider the potential of rescoping the project grant on March 18, 2024.
