The problem we face is that our officers haven’t been trained in applying problem-solving methods to effectively develop response strategies and assess their effectiveness at reducing crime.
In 2023 the Chief of Police instituted a Data-Led Policing Initiative to guide patrol operations. The Crime Analysis unit facilitates this by providing the department with a series of monthly reports identifying trends and locations of police activity related to violence, property crime, traffic collisions and homelessness. These reports identify geographic focus areas based on historical trends, citizen complaints, and related municipal initiatives such as the tracking and mapping of homeless encampments. Additionally, these reports provide analytical notes about ongoing trends, as well as graphic visuals showing how recent data compares to historical trends. Furthermore, Sergeants are provided with an interactive dashboard allowing them to interact with the data used to identify each focus area and develop response strategies based on known best practices.
These first level supervisors need to be well-versed in the concepts of Problem Oriented Policing (POP) and how they can be operationalized into daily activities including integrating the analytic dashboard that help to prevent and reduce crime.
