Between July and December 2014, the NGA Center provided technical assistance to governors’ offices. In all, we responded to nine requests for assistance.
Below is a summary of the technical assistance we provided:
1) The NGA Center received a request from the governor’s office in Michigan about the outsourcing of food services and whether this can lead to cost savings for states. NGA Center staff surveyed all governors’ offices and compiled their responses in an email.
2) The NGA Center received a request from the Iowa governor’s office about where to find data sources that could help them understand the scope of prescription drug abuse in the state. NGA Center staff conducted research, consulted partner organizations, and prepared a summary of information it compiled.
3) The NGA Center received a request from the Montana governor’s office about the designation of counties as part of the regional HIDTA. NGA Center staff contacted the Office of National Drug Control Policy and compiled a response in a memo.
4) The NGA Center received a request from the Wisconsin governor’s office about where each state houses their juvenile corrections and community corrections functions. NGA Center staff prepared a spreadsheet showing state-by-state comparisons of which agency oversees juvenile corrections and community corrections.
5) In response to questions from governors’ offices, the NGA Center sent several resources with information about the Ebola epidemic, including several articles that provide overviews of federal, state, and local authority for addressing Ebola. In addition, NGA Center staff sent links to state statutes related to quarantine/isolation.
6) The NGA Center received a request from the Wyoming governor’s office about the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency’s revised definitions of “detained” and “confined.” Specifically, they wanted to know how the revised definitions will impact other states. NGA Center staff surveyed all governors’ offices and compiled responses in an email for the state.
7) The NGA Center received a request from the California governor’s office about OJJDP’s revised definitions of “detained” and “confined.” NGA Center staff reviewed guidance from OJJDP, compiled relevant resources, and sent a brief overview of their findings.
8) The NGA Center received a request from the governor’s office in Connecticut about innovative programs in other states for connecting offenders with jobs. NGA Center staff surveyed governors’ criminal justice policy advisors for their input and conducted additional research. They compiled helpful resources as well as responses the NGA Center received from states.
9) The NGA Center received a request from the Nevada governor’s office about model state legislation on naloxone and Good Samaritan laws. NGA Center staff reached out to partner organizations, conducted additional research, and compiled information in an email.
