Requestors are asking for funding to travel to the conference/meeting. This will include flight, baggage fees, per diem, hotel, and hotel. Exact amounts will be obtained, the currently known information is hotel ($706.80), baggage fees ($60 - round trip). The additional costs will be investigated shortly.
Requestor Hansen is a member of the Scientific Working Group on Digital Evidence, a nationwide organization involved in standards development in the area of digital and multimedia evidence whose members are subject matter experts in digital forensics from around the country as well as internationally. Requestor Hansen is also a board member of this organization, and is responsible for editing, formatting, and maintaining the documents and white papers produced by the organization. The organization meets approximately three times a year to collaborate on documents in all areas of digital and multimedia forensics. The members also work on trending issues in digital forensics, and collaborate with other organizations such as OSAC, NIST, and ASTM (and their respective digital and multimedia forensics subcommittees). Traditionally, the organization has received funding for state and local law enforcement to attend these meetings, but funding has been absent for the last two years. Requestor has exhausted her funding options through her office and other potential sources, and therefore does not have the funding to travel to Pittsburgh for the next meeting in September (from September 18 to 23). Funding is believed to have been secured for state and local law enforcement for future meetings - i.e., this is the last meeting for the next two years for which funding has NOT been secured. This is also the last meeting that Requestor will be a board member, and her attendance at this meeting would be very beneficial to the organization for a productive transfer of duties to the new board member. Participation in SWGDE is a substantial benefit to Requestor's work in digital evidence, which is also beneficial to her work on several BJA grants involving digital evidence. Presence at the conference/meeting provides Requestor with updated information related to digital forensics, the ability to understand this evidence at a deeper level, and the opportunity to maintain connections with others in the digital forensics field. In addition, the Denver District Attorney's Office is in the process of training an additional prosecutor in digital evidence in order to expand its ability to address the digital evidence needs of the office as well as provide assistance to the current Digital Evidence Unit Director (Requestor Hansen) that will allow her the flexibility to work on innovative and proactive strategies and legal responses to digital evidence issues as well as providing training to prosecutors and law enforcement around the country. Requestor Matthew Schlager is this prosecutor, and his presence at the SWGDE conference/meeting will allow him the exposure to the work being done by the organization, which will enhance his digital forensics knowledge base. It will also provide him with the connections with individuals in the digital forensics community that will allow for enhanced and sustained networking in this field.
