The overall objective is to address the problem of wrongful conviction, especially cases of wrongful conviction that occur as a result of flawed forensic evidence and insufficient access to sophisticated forensic training for defense lawyers. NACDL's goals are to provide training and technical assistance to defense counsel to identify, correct (through litigation and other avenues), and also prevent cases of wrongful conviction. The objective also includes identifying unreliable forensics that often lead to wrongful convictions. NACDL will work with law enforcement to identify possible cases of wrongful conviction, assist in ensuring that defendants are notified, and, where necessary and appropriate, recruit defense counsel to assist individuals in pursuing post-conviction innocence claims.
