The United States Attorney's Office in Louisiana requested advanced investigations training for three parishes in Louisiana. Until training can happen in person, it will be supplemented by online trainings through the PSP Virtual Academy.
According to many sources such as worldpopulationreview.com, Louisiana has the highest murder rate in the U.S. of 14.4 murders per 100,000 residents. Murders were more than twice as common in Louisiana as they were nationwide. In speaking with numerous law enforcement personnel over the past year, it has been learned that many state/local law enforcement agencies cannot afford to send new, or additional violent crime/homicide detectives to receive certification training due to the high cost of said training. The inability to send the additional detectives has led to a shortage of certified detectives and an increased workload on the ones that are certified. This situation has been corroborated by Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Karen Matthews, who also serves on the board of the Louisiana Homicide Investigators Association (LHIA).
