On December 7, 2020, Center staff Colleen Gibbons, David Lucas, and Jarred Williams held an exploratory call with representatives of the Utah State Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health: Adult Substance Abuse Treatment Administrator, Shanel Long, program manager and lead, Christine Simonette, and Assistant Division Director, Brent Kelsey to discuss the state's FY2020 BJA-funded grant. The grant seeks to enhance and expand services at all Utah 's 11 problem-solving courts by increasing capacity, providing more evidence-based , improving monitoring relapse prevention, aftercare and community integration. Center staff discussed several options to collaborate. Center staff and representatives of the State of Utah will revisit discussions in January.
In January, Center staff David Lucas exchanged emails with representatives of the Utah State Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health to revisit discuss how the Center can help that state meet project deliverables. Representatives advised that the state is currently enduring difficulties with their BJA grant as the Office of Justice Programs will not accept their indirect cost agreement thus prohibiting them from having their funds released. In the meantime, Mr. Lucas and representatives of Utah will schedule a call to introduce the Center's services.
Ms. Simonette advised that the DSAMH is enduring issues with the Department of Justice’s grants and payment management website, JustGrants. After surmounting issues with the website, Ms. Simonette advised of other, state-specific impediments to continuing discussions on how the Center can support Utah. The Center looks forward to collaborating in the next reporting period.
