On November 19, Center staff David Lucas and Alejandra Garcia reached out to Oklahoma statewide drug court coordinator, Steve Burdex, to introduce the Center's services and propose coordinating to assist Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) achieve the deliverables of its FY 2020 grant proposal. Nisha Wilson, the statewide drug court coordinator before Mr. Burdex, was also copied on the email as she wrote the original grant proposal. The grant proposal includes developing an online tool for courts to self-asses their adherence to best practices as well as create a web-based system that will generate recommendations and training resources based on the results of the self-assessment tool. On December 16, Mr. Lucas and Ms. Garcia held an exploratory call with Steve Burdex, Nisha Wilson, and recently-hired, Tammy Westcott, a supervisor for the specialty courts' division in the the Tulsa County DA's office. Ms. Westcott has considerable experience working with the National Drug Court Institute. Center staff will draft a workplan and return for review and feedback.
Center staff Alejandra Garcia and David Lucas have submitted a draft work plan to the statewide drug court coordinator and representatives of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) for review and feedback. Center staff will develop a web-based, self-assessment tool for Oklahoma drug courts to use to evaluate their adherence to drug court best practices as well as core competencies for team members. Once complete, the tool with generate resources and recommendations to mitigate any deficiencies as identified by the tool.
In January, Center Alejandra Garcia, David Lucas, and Karen Otis met with the Center's technology department to discuss where the Center-developed self assessment tool should be housed. Ms. Christofferson and Ms. Otis continue to work on the content of the assessment, they are also looking for the best platform to host the tool. Project lead, Tammy Westcott, is also meeting with the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS)'s technology department to discuss the possibility of using in-house platforms to house the tool.
On April 26th, Center staff Alejandra Garcia, David Lucas, and Colleen Gibbons submitted a draft of the first part of the self-assessment to project lead, Tammy Westcott, for review and approval. The first part of the tool will assess individual courts' adhere to the national drug court best practice standards developed by the National Association for Drug Court Professionals. Center are continuing to work on part two of the tool that assess a team member's core competencies based on role.
Center staff are continuing to meet with members of the Center's technology, communications, and research departments in an effort to locate the appropriate platform to host the Center-developed self-assessment tool. Peter Liu has been added onto the project to help guide the search for an suitable platform. Mr. Liu is both a consultant with the Center's technology and communications department.
