The New Jersey State Parole Board (NJSPB) requested the Survive & Thrive Fundamentals: Protecting You and Your Fellow Officers training program to be presented to their sworn law enforcement officers. This training is offered through the VALOR program; BJA NTTAC connected the NJSPB to the Valor program as a referral.
The NJSPB has 385 sworn law enforcement parole officers. Throughout their daily duties they are facing increasing hostile and dangerous environments and making hundreds of arrests each year on new criminal charges. They perform these duties in an environment more isolated that the geographically authorized law enforcement officer who is dispatched and has local backup aware of their location and activities. Officer safety issues are always a vital training area requiring attention. In addition, over the past couple of years, we have had many instances of mental health issues with serious consequences. These have included job terminations, criminal charges, alcoholism/death, and an officer with their weapon drawn to their head when local law enforcement arrived. Additional training is sought as part of an on-going wellness program for officers.
