The Social Security Administration disability benefit programs – Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) – can provide income and health insurance benefits to support healthy return to communities for previously incarcerated individuals who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and have a serious mental illness, medical impairment, and/or a co-occurring substance use disorder. SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR) is a model that can help.
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ 2016 report, people with disabilities were more than three times more likely to experience violent crime than people without disabilities from 2010 to 2014. At the same time, only 13 percent of violent crime victims with disabilities received assistance from non-police victim services agencies. The recent increases in state Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) victim assistance grants create a unique opportunity to increase the number of crime victims with disabilities who access victim services.
Construction of a new public safety facility is a rare occurrence for most agencies. The person tasked as project owner or manager may have little or no experience in this area because it is often a once-in-a-career situation. This case study of constructing the Chandler Public Safety Training Center will assist law enforcement planners and others that are given this type of opportunity with an overview of constructing a contemporary facility. Individuals exiting prisons and jails have an increased likelihood of opioid overdose. Some corrections systems have chosen to address this risk through the use of reentry programs that incorporate medication-assisted treatment (MAT). While a range of Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program site-based projects are tackling the opioid epidemic by focusing on the front end of the criminal justice system (for example, through the roles of first responders), several teams are focusing on improving jail- and prison-related strategies.
Body worn cameras (BWCs) have been in the news for the past couple of years. To better educate local governments on the trending issues surrounding this topic, Leonard Matarese will lead a discussion with the CNA Institute for Public Research, which directs and coordinates technical assistance regarding BWCs for the hundreds of police agencies that have received funding in recent years from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) under the BWC Policy and Implementation Program (PIP).
The webinar will provide an overview of the STOP School Violence solicitations that are available from the Bureau of Justice Assistance and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.
